She later completed a dissertation on love in Saint Augustine at Heidelberg, supervised by Karl Jaspers. <a href=\"#ref-bard\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_Paris_and_Gurs_to_New_York\"><\/span>From Paris and Gurs to New York<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"bio-exile\">Paris became her home in 1933. In France, she worked for Youth Aliyah, an organization assisting Jewish young people. She was interned at Gurs in 1940. The following year, she emigrated to the United States with her husband, Heinrich Bl\u00fccher, and settled in New York. <a href=\"#ref-loc\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"bio-work\">Her working life in America extended beyond teaching. She was a journalist, an editor at Schocken Books, and executive director of Jewish Cultural Reconstruction. In 1951, she became a US citizen and published <em>The Origins of Totalitarianism<\/em>. <a href=\"#ref-loc\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Books_and_publication_dates\"><\/span>Books and publication dates<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"bio-books\">The Library of Congress chronology dates <em>The Origins of Totalitarianism<\/em> to 1951, <em>The Human Condition<\/em> to 1958, and <em>Eichmann in Jerusalem<\/em> to 1963. These dates refer to the English-language publications, not to later translations or revised editions. <a href=\"#ref-loc\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"bio-trial\">Arendt&#8217;s book on Eichmann grew out of her reporting on the 1961 trial for <em>The New Yorker<\/em>. It stirred controversy. <a href=\"#ref-bard\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Totalitarianism_freedom_and_responsibility\"><\/span>Totalitarianism, freedom, and responsibility<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"bio-ideas\">Arendt examined Nazism and Stalinism as forms of totalitarian domination. Her account of political freedom centers on people acting together. The phrase banality of evil concerns her interpretation of Eichmann, not an acquittal or a dismissal of his crimes. Scholars have challenged that interpretation. <a href=\"#ref-sep\" target=\"_blank\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Teaching_and_posthumous_publication\"><\/span>Teaching and posthumous publication<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"bio-late\">Arendt taught at the New School for Social Research in New York from 1967 to 1975. <em>The Life of the
